The Grayslake North Sophomore Baseball team was undefeated (4-0) over spring break. The Knights opened the season beating Lakes twice; the team came back from two large deficits to go (2-0).
The Knights defeated the Wauconda Bulldogs in another comeback victory. Jason Conklin came in relief of Ed Tattera to earn the Win. North ended the week defeating the Round Lake Panthers 11-1 as Chris Stielow ended the game in the 5th an RBI single. In their last game the team lost to the Mundelein Mustangs, this gave the Knights (4-1) their first lose of the season.

April 9-20

The Grayslake North Sophomore Baseball team started the week at Woodstock High School against the Blue Streaks. The Knights won the game with timely hitting and good defense. The Knights then lost to the Cary Grove Trojans. Their next game was a home game against the Crystal Lake South Gators. The Knights won the game in extra innings with a walk off hit by Grant Henricksen. The Knights then hosted the Jacobs Golden Eagles, again this game went into extra innings but the Knights could not pull this one out. The Knights then faced the Dundee Crown Chargers posting an 8-1 victory. Brandon Schroth earned the victory with a complete game. The Knights ended the week losing to McHenry and Huntley.

April 23
After the Knights ended the week with two tough losses the team then beat Huntley with Ed Tatera earning the win. The Knights then took on Grant in an out of conference match up and the Knights won with Jason Conklin pitching a complete game and earning the win. North then faced Antioch and won both games of a double header. The first game was pitched by Matt Robinson and he earned the win for the Knights. In the second game Nate Sousa pitched a complete game and earned the win. The next game for North was against the team’s rival Grayslake Central. The Knights won the game on a bases loaded triple by Grant Hendrickson. He also earned the win and pitched a complete game. The Knights then faced Prairie Ridge and won the game with Ed Tatera pitching five solid innings. The save was earned by Seth Foster. The sophomore team’s record is now 13-6.

Freshman Team

Summary
March 23

The first game of the Freshmen A and B teams was a double header against Lakes. The A team lost both there games but the B team after being slaughtered in the first game came back to win in the second game 18-17. Mike Frayley lead the Knights hitting three triples on the day. The next day the B team was on the road at Stevenson and after sloppy defense they lost 18-1. The A team was at home against Wauconda and after great pitching by Matt Robinson the Knights picked up the win. The next game both teams were together against Round Lake for a double header the Knights won both games by great pitching in the first game by Kyle Walker.

April 9

The next games for both A and B teams where going to be tough. The A team would be at Woodstock and the B bombers at home going up against Vernon Hills. The A team lost a hard played game 1-0 after great pitching by Tom Yadron, but it just wasn’t enough to pick up the win. The B team also lost after being out played by Vernon Hills. The following Saturday both teams were together against the Cary Grove Trojans. The Knights played well but just not well enough and lost both games. The Knights were going to have a rough week with six games ahead of them.

April 16

On Monday 4/16 it was a split squad and the A team was playing the Crystal Lake South Gators and the b team was away in Antioch. The A team lost but the B-bombers scored nine runs in the first inning and after the longest game of the season, almost four hours, the Knights won the game 25-17 with the help of great bats. On Tuesday 4/17 the B team was at Lakes and played a great game with the help of starting pitcher Bryant Poggensee-Wei who threw 5 2/3 innings, and then relief pitcher Ryan Veinotte closed the door on the Eagles giving up no runs the rest of the game. The Knights scored three runs in the 7th inning to go on to win the game 6-3. The A team lost to H.D Jacobs on the same day. On Wednesday 4/18 both teams were together for a conference game in Dundee Crown and were defeated by ten runs. On Thursday 4/19 the B bombers were at Lakes again and didn’t play as well this time and fell short by five runs. On Friday 4/20 the A team was looking to win there second conference game of the season but after a well pitched game by Mike Verjist the Knights lost 5-3 against McHenry. To finish this long week both teams were together for another conference game against Huntley High School the Knights bats were hot in the A game including Brian Goebelt going 3-4 with two doubles and the Knights went on to win the game by slaughter. The second game it was the defense that won the game for the Knights by starting pitcher Andrew Jackson and clutch pitching by the closer, Sean McBrien. The game also included one of the best sacrifice bunts this year by Tom Murphy to score Andrew Jackson. All in all, the Knights ended the long week on a good note and look to win four straight as a club on Monday 4/23 as the A team will once again, go up against Huntley and the B team will play Antioch.

April 23

The first games of the week for the Freshmen were the A team at Huntley and the B team hosting Antioch. The A team pulled out another win off of just one hit by Brian Goebelt the final score of the game was 6-1. The B team didn’t play there best game and lost to Antioch. On Tuesday the A team was at home against Grant but got out played by the Bulldogs. Then, after two straight rain outs the Knights were going to play the Sequoits of Antioch. The first game of the double header Mike Verwijst pitched an outstanding complete game only giving up three runs and went on to win 9-3. The second game it was also the pitching that got the won it for the Knights starting pitcher Ryan Veinotte went the first five innings giving up three runs. The score of the game was 4-3 when the Knights brought in Sean Humphrey who earned the first save of the year. The final score of the game was 4-3.

May 7
To start of the week the Knights were expecting a win against Johnsburg but, after playing very flat the Knights didn’t get the win they were expecting. The next day it was a B game and they were going up against there rivals, Grayslake Central who neither of the freshman teams had ever beat. The B-bombers were very focused and ready to play starting pitcher Ryan Veinotte threw a great game with the help of some great fielding and great at bats. Ryan also got the game winning RBI to go on and defeat the Rams 14-4. The next two games were both against Crystal Lake Central. The Knights lost both games against the Tigers. Up next was a double header against Huntley were in the first game the Knights were one out away from the win but then ended up losing by eight. The Knights also lost the second game 12-8.
